Røros is an old copper mining town and was founded in 1644 when the manager of Kvikne Copper Works started trial mining in Rauhåmmåren. Although the last working mine, at Killingdal, closed in 1986, the town is rich in cultural heritage from the mining industry. Today the Olav Mine is preserved, several sites of smelting works are visible and logging canals have been restored.
