China is an ancient civilisation whose long and sometimes turbulent history has left us a rich cultural heritage, evident in its magnificent architecture, works of art and traditions. A land of greatly contrasting scenery, from breathtaking mountains to cultivated valleys, searing deserts to shimmering rivers, small rural villages to soaring modern cities.

In November 1994, I flew to Beijing -an old and a new city - old in its cultural heritage, and new as the Chinese capital. It has a history dating back 3000 years and has served as the capital for more than 800 years. So many of the buildings directly reflect the country’s history that it quickly becomes obvious to any visitor how integral the city’s development has been to the rise and fall of dynasties, and indeed to Chinese civilisation itself.
